Kids, Dancers, and Writers to Come Together at
The Baltimore Museum of Art
Experiment in Movement and Language is Open to All

The Full Circle Dancers and Writers Project, a novel experiment in movement and language, concludes with a participatory public performance at the Baltimore Museum of Art Meyerhoff Auditorium on October 9 at 7:00 pm. Tickets are $10 and are available by calling 410-235-9003.

The Dancers and Writers Project will bring together a group of middle and high school kids, a group of professional writers, and a company of professional dancers to learn about and highlight the importance of dance writing.

Twenty students will be selected to attend a dance writing workshop hosted by the Morton Street Foundation, as well as the October 9 concert of the Full Circle Dance Company at the Baltimore Museum of Art. A diverse group of 10 professional writers, most of whom do not usually write about dance, will also attend the October 9 concert.

The concert will be open to the public, and every audience member, including the students and writers selected in advance, will write a description of the action onstage. The point of this exercise is that writing about dance stretches the brain in new ways, even for experienced writers. Writers who don't have knowledge of dance vocabulary must find creative ways to express the physical action they see. For young writers, this artistic experiment offers an opportunity to focus on vivid description. For experienced writers, it offers a chance to apply techniques used in other forms of writing to dance criticism. For all audience members, writing about a performance enhances observation of the action on the stage, and creating linguistic description enhances memory of the work observed.

Audience writings will be gathered and made available in a public forum—a special website or print publication. The resulting aggregation of reviews will be a concrete work of art itself.

Baltimore has a thriving dance community and is rich in talented writers. Dancers, writers, and students will all benefit from a live art experience that brings dancers and writers into direct conversation.
